H+F arquitetos tiers mountain-side house in santo antonio do pinhal

on a sloped site in the mantiqueira mountains in southeastern brazil, sao paulo-based studio H+F arquitetos has completed the house in santo antonio do pinhal. t

he particular site informed the design and construction of the project, existing in two phases. architecturally, there is an experiential contrast between the entry level rooms facing the landscape and public road area, and the lower rooms which enjoy a more untamed forest environment, lower in elevation.

the construction, due to the slope, was also executed in two phases. first, the retaining walls, masonry structural walls, and floor slabs were laid out, setting the foundation on a terrain prone to landslides. secondly the steel and wood members took form, sculpting the remaining walls and single-pitch roof structures. glass panels wrap the forest-side of the upper living areas extending views over the valley and the lower portion of the house below. in between the upper and lower tiers a sunken exterior courtyard provides private outdoor space and helps negotiate the slope connecting the home. from the top level, a green bridge extends across to the rooftop deck and overhanging garden of the lower level. using the characteristics of the site, the design enjoys a variety of spaces and privacy taking advantage of the changes in elevation and the connecting elements in between.
