kim jong-bok art museum completed by chun architects in south korea

the ‘kim jong-bok’ art museum — located at daegu catholic university in gyeongsan, south korea — commemorates the works and life of the korean painter.

originally built as a student union building, chun architects was commissioned to repurpose the space as a cultural hub in the region in order to provide a high level of art education to students and the public. 100 jong-bok originals were donated to the facility, showing her artistic progression from the 1940’s to present.

since the space is dedicated to jong-bok, chun architects and team attempted to use imagery (mountains) that are often used in her paintings. their abstractions are applied directly to several areas, most prominently at the front entrance. in addition, abstract patterns — taken loosely from jong-bok’s stroke technique — is applied to surfaces in the café and seminar areas, as well as the basement entrance.
