Old Belgian barn is transformed into a gorgeous contemporary home

Belgian architecture firm Sito-architecten recently transformed an old barn into a stunning modern home.

Located in Nukerke at the heart of the Flemish Ardennes region, the renovated building overlooks panoramic views of the hilly countryside through large windows that extend up to a high gable roof. The architects clad the home in handsome black aluminum siding and wooden slats to give the building a contemporary appearance, while complementing the rural surroundings.

Wrapped in a thick insulating shell, the Nukerke barn house is designed for optimal comfort. Natural light streams into the home through skylights and ample glazing, while solar shading protects against unwanted solar heat gain. Outdoor living is embraced with an outdoor wrap-around patio that sits flush with the turf, as well as an outdoor balcony that extends from one side of the house.

In contrast to the black aluminum and timber facade, the interior is covered in nearly all-white surfaces, from the walls and ceilings to the floor and furnishings. An open-plan kitchen, double-height living room, and dining area take up most of the first floor. However, the use of white is interrupted by color accents in the other rooms and upstairs bedrooms; the walls surrounding around the staircase, for instance, are painted burgundy.
