DX arquitectos' weekend house in chile references le corbusier's cabanon

blending into the wooded surroundings in the outskirts of santiago in chile, locally-based firm DX arquitectos have designed a textured weekend house drawing reference to modernist architect le corbusier’s holiday home ‘cabonan’.

conceived as a retreat for the family to get away from the city and engage with nature, the architects explore the traditional form of a hut to produce ‘cabana tunquen’.

‘we sought to play with the hut’s iconic image by making it resemble a child’s drawing of a house, creating a formal tension between the object and its representation.’ – DX arquitectos

its gabled form resembles a child’s drawing of a house with the entire external envelope wrapped in a dark timber paneling. the choice of material – left exposed – gives the structure texture which is relevant to its mysterious and isolated context. a porch area supported by beams resemble the nearby trees, and marks the entry into the two-leveled home.

the architects took influence from le corbusier’s cabanon built in 1952
