concrete casa l4 by luciano kruk enjoys ocean-side living
argentinean architect luciano kruk has shared with us his most recent project, casa l4, located in a densely vegetated area along the coast of costa esmeralda.
the house serves as a holiday house for the architect and his girlfriend, designed to accommodate themselves and guests for shorter periods of time. given the number of projects built in the same area, the design stems from a history of experience that led to the use of exposed concrete which maintains its structural and aesthetic with minimal maintenance.
folding planes of board-form concrete frame interior spaces leaving edges free for long spans of glass. being centered around entertainment purposes, the house is organized primarily on one floor with the living room and kitchen areas comprising the majority of the floor plan. the four bedrooms and private bathrooms are allocated along the outer corners of the footprint in order to give them maximum privacy from one another. due to the proportions of the floor plan and subsequent depth, skylights are utilized for natural interior illumination. additionally, a centrally located staircase helps to subdivide central spaces without the use of walls and protrudes through the roof slab creating a light well and an access point onto the rooftop deck and swimming pool.
the front and back facades of the house are mostly defined by full panes of glass that direct views towards the ocean and towards the entrance. the surrounding earth tones of the local pines form a natural wall of privacy around the house offsetting the palette of exposed concrete. structure and function are are designed to support one another- beams become walls punctured by niches that accommodate fixtures or storage spaces, so every element in the house serves two purposes.
