edwards moore designs teaching facilities for hospitality school in melbourne
edwards moore is a melbourne-based architecture and design studio founded in 2009. their work ranges from private houses, retail spaces, exhibitions and temporary pavilions, to buildings and large scale city planning projects.
on this occasion, they present us a dynamic new design for the local-based william angliss institute, consisting of a training hotel facility that provides a series of hospitality teaching areas linked across three levels within their existing campus.
the reception, lobby and hotel suites are located on the fourth level, where the existing space was broken down to create a series of lounge areas. the aim was to shift the existing institutional ambiance to a more intimate one, with tactile elements and reduced light levels. to highlight this smoky and relaxed atmosphere, a subtle gradient-painted wall was paired with transparent gray curtains and dark furniture.
three rooms were designed, giving each one a different feeling. the ’soho suite’ features bright yellow painted walls that create a vibrant, fun, and cheeky interiors with accents of pink neon. the ‘kyoto suite’, on the other hand, showcases a more calm and peaceful ambiance carried through with shoji screens that soften direct sunlight. as for the ‘brooklyn suite’, it has a contemporary feeling with rough edges, and gray concrete colors, OSB joinery, and metallic chain screens.
the business lounge is located on level 3 and is comprised of a series of organic work zones defined by the use of curved acrylic screens that allow for informal work within a vibrant and energized interior. the yellow painted backdrop carries through to the flooring and furniture. as for level 2, it comprises a flight training facility where the existing corridor space was fitted with aircraft seats and with a cloud mural. the space is unified by an orange painted wall and rubber flooring which carries through to the seating upholstery.
the studio collaborated with ross didier for the furnishing part, extending the design intent across all levels, and lighting design was done with jonathan ben-tovim.
