trigueiros architecture clads swedish dwelling entirely in timber shingles

simple in form but expressive in its material, the ‘cone house’ by trigueiros architecture is sited on a hill in a swedish archipelago.

the construction saw the combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern techniques. most noticeable is the scheme’s envelope which is clad completely in cedar shingles, including the entrance and roof. this characteristic draws influence from a building method commonly used in churches in norway and sweden.

the steep roof pitch has enabled the floor plan of the three levels to share an elevated view of the island landscape. throughout the dwelling, the architects placed an emphasis on the meticulous details and materials used. inside, the ceiling and floors have been clad in waxed oak planking. at the same time, an oak staircase extends through the entire house from the ground floor to the upper terraces. the rooms range from being 2.5 meters to 7 meters high creating a variation of spatial experiences – from private to cosy and communal.

‘the architecture is the result of the desire to push creativity combined with committed partners’ comments the architect ‘the client was not looking for a conventional house, but wanted to experiment and develop their lifestyle.’

large windows on each side and a skylight permeates each space with natural light and provides views of the waterfront. unlike its envelope which uses a single material, the designers opted for a selection for the details, accents and surfaces including marble, timber planking and white walls for the interior. in the end, the cone house has become a contemporary scheme rooted in its heritage, with a distinctive character expressed through material, texture and its connection to nature.
