tammo prinz proposes stacked rings as helsinki's guggenheim
german practice tammo prinz architects recently shared with us their proposal for the guggenheim helsinki museum competition, stemming from the nature of the curved marinas and nearby islands
the design manifests as a series of massive structural rings, stacked upon and intruding into one another to bridge over to the sunken public plaza in the water. circulation is situated along the periphery of the rings leaving the center open for various large exhibition spaces, similar to new york’s guggenheim but on a more horizontal plane.
the rings allow for easy regulation of transparency and consequently provides various environments suited for different types of art and external visual experiences. the structure greets the visitor on land, elevates them to see panoramic views of the city and harbor, and then lowers them below water line to a sub-marine exterior plaza.
