Daniel libeskind plans vilnius beacon ski center in lithuania

Working alongside the city of vilnius, daniel libeskind has proposed plans for a ski center to be constructed at the liepkalnis ski hill in lithuania.

Named the ‘vilnius beacon’, the project seeks to create a new tourist destination for the baltic region, located between the historic city center and the nearby airport. alongside winter sports, the center will also provide a range of summer activities, offering a program of recreational and cultural entertainment for guests of all ages.

at the center of the masterplan, a circular plaza encompasses the open arena, while two primary structures are sited along the periphery of the site. connecting the scheme, a zig-zagging canopy creates a protected pathway between the main areas of the complex. the main entrance building is defined by its sinuous façade and tilted roofline that contains ticket booths and retail outlets.

across the site to the northeast, a three-storey lodge is set into the hill side, with a curved roof that forms an extension of the surrounding landscape. the ground floor houses an open lobby with a multipurpose space for year-round events, while above, visitors can dine at a casual bistro. at the building’s uppermost level, a gourmet restaurant with wrap around windows gives diners sweeping views of the city center and the landscape beyond. construction is scheduled to begin in 2015, with a projected completion date of 2016.
