Scale-like brick facades envelop Des Écailles residences in Montreal
Architecture studio L. McComber ltée replaced a 60-year-old house in Montreal with three modern single-family residences, each clad in a scale-like envelope made of brick and cedar. The architects divided the land into three distinct lots, each accommodating a single-family residence with a rear garden bathed in southern light.
The first development phase comprises two semi-detached residences clad in dark clay brick with entrances highlighted in a light natural cedar siding. The brick volume, dominated by horizontality, is marked by a frieze of oblique protruding bricks that create a scale-like texture. This composition is reversed in the back, where the brick base transitions to a second-story featuring a light volume of cedar arranged in a series of vertical sections.
The garage features a series of split levels with an office space above, opening onto a two-story living room. A stairway connects these volumes with a path extending toward the kitchen that opens into the garden.
