Old bridge renovation in the Netherlands to make even more room for cyclists and pedestrians

The old IJsselbrug bridge in the Netherlands will soon get a modern makeover, with more space for pedestrians and cyclists. Dutch firm Moederscheim Moonen Architects and engineering firm APcon BV won the bid to widen the existing structure and transform it into a new landmark on the River IJssel.

The redesign will provide a generous curb for pedestrians and cyclists that will raise the bridge’s visibility from a distance. Strong, clean lines create a recognizable identity with a comfortable layout. Two staircases lead up to the bridge deck and feature landings that allow visitors to pause.

“The main concept underlying the design was a combination of comfort and tangible quality for pedestrians and cyclists experiencing the bridge up close, and a strong and recognizable identity for viewers experiencing it from a distance,” said architect Erik Moederscheim. “Taking this theme as a point of departure, we designed a profile that forms a strong, clean line in the surrounding landscape and creates a comfortable layout,” he added. Construction work and repairs are expected to start next year.
