MGAO designs rural hill house in new south wales' nambucca valley
the ‘hill house’, by MGAO, is located in the small village of valla, in the nambucca valley of new south wales, australia. situated on a narrow plateau, the residence — which is still in pre-construction phases — is surrounded on three sides by an expansive valley and dense bushland on the fourth.
the concept creates contrast within the house via distinctive southern and northern faces. to the south — ‘closed’ side — the ‘hill house’ is clad entirely in corrugated sheet. the material evokes a sense of rural living akin to numerous barns and hay sheds that dot the surrounding landscape.
on the northern side, the dwelling is much more open. three blocks: for working, living, and sleeping are connected via a single corridor which runs the length of the home. each opens to the landscape in a way appropriate to its function, and in total creates a sense of seclusion and privacy for the client.
