Mecanoo elevates intertwined bridges for moroccan station proposal

Following the conclusion of a recent design competition, where no winners were selected, dutch practice mecanoo has revealed their proposed design for a new railway station in morocco.

Strategically positioned at the intersection of a series of important routes, the ‘rabat agdal’ transport hub would not only serve as the gateway to the country’s capital city, but also as a destination to live, work and play.

through the creation of an elevated passageway that connects multiple access points, the entire structure serves as a complex bridge, allowing pedestrians to cross from one part of the city to another. suspended above the rail lines, the intertwined network of routes combines space for transport, recreation, culture and work.

located on the project’s main axis, the passenger hall creates a strategic crossing point and an inviting meeting place for congregation. within the design, public activities, such as shopping, cultural facilities and hotels, are directly connected to the station, while housing accommodation is located at the north edge of the site, merging with the surrounding residential developments.

by concentrating the area for travelers, public program and pedestrian connections within the elevated canopy, the ground level can be used to improve the existing public space, resulting in a landscaped public sphere with sports fields, markets and gardens. rooftop solar panels ensure passive climate solutions, while the open nature of the suspended station is naturally cooled by air currents flowing through the site – consequently minimizing the need for mechanical cooling.
