Sky Tower

At 328m tall, inclusive of its observation and telecommunications tower, Auckland’s Sky Tower is one of New Zealand's most identifiable structures and one of the world’s great towers – taller even than the famed Eiffel Tower

Standing atop a 2.5m-deep concrete pad supported on 16 piles penetrating 13.5m into sandstone, the 12m-diameter reinforced concrete shaft soars 226m skyward. It has been stiffened by eight raking 2m-diameter reinforced concrete legs at the base connected to the shaft via a reinforced concrete collar. Above the shaft, a multi-section mast, constructed of structural steel tubes and lattice trusses, provides space for communications antennae and other equipment.

Upper floors of the tower itself are comprised of composite structural steel, concrete slabs and reinforced concrete. Sky Tower’s 3400sq.m. facilities include a revolving restaurant seating 226 diners, communications areas and observation decks. Since its completion in the late Nineties, it has deservedly earned a reputation as one of Auckland’s major attractions together with the adjoining SkyCity Casino.
