A beach house in California turns industrial ruins into paradise

Paradise emerges from ruins. Romanian design studio Razvan Barsan + Partners have transformed a former industrial site into a dreamlike seaside home.

Located on a remote beach in California, the dwelling boasts an industrial skeleton combined with local natural materials. Designed to make the most out of the Ocean, 'Bay House' comes complete with decks, its own dock and a little island.

Razvan Barsan + Partners’ key concern with this project was to respect the site’s industrial past while connecting the home with its natural surroundings. The ‘honest architecture’ completely reveals its structure and technical equipment while incorporating green materials. Local wood, reed and bamboo express the relationship between the home and the exotic landscape.

Bay House is closely connected to the beach and ocean through materials and outdoor spaces. From the house on the beach one can walk along a dock and arrive on a small island complete with loungers, a fire pit and palm trees. The resulting home is a sustainable retreat that fits gracefully within its surroundings.
