Lake Cottage in Ontario, Canada by UUfie
A study on evanescence and merging with nature, the idiosyncratic Lake Cottage by architecture practice UUfie was designed to give the sense of living in a tree house.
Situated in a forest along the Kawartha Lakes in Canada, the cottage blurs the limits between the inside and the outside through its numerous openings and mirrors on the terrace that reflect the surrounding trees. The main living space boasts a seven-metre-high gabled roof and fourteen openings to other parts of the house and the exterior which in itself is a feature that strengthens the impression of living amongst the branches of a tree.
A solid-wood staircase leads up to an unconventionally diagonal loft, its one side covered with light blue tiles that resemble large fish scales (diagonal lines are perhaps the most prominent feature of the cottage’s overall design). The whole house has been constructed using local materials and traditional techniques, an example being the charred cedar planks that cover the exterior walls.
About the designers
UUfie is the architecture and design studio of architects Eiri Ota and Irene Gardpoit. Based in Toronto, Canada, the studio is active globally and can provide full architectural design services, from concept design stage to construction supervision. Recent projects range in scale and type from private houses, furniture to major commercial and cultural projects in Europe, Asia and North America.
