510 Cabin is a beautiful creation by architecture students from around the world

An elegant design of cabin curated through creative collaborations from chosen students.

When one client needed a flexible vacation spot on a budget that could sleep up to ten people, architects Hunter Leggitt Studio (HLS) created the 510 Cabin in the high desert near Lake Isabella in California.

In the end, seven students were chosen to come live in the area and work on the project as part of a hands-on learning experience. The result is a modern cabin that created a legacy of learning for the students involved and a customized escape for the family who lives there.

The cabin is designed to sleep five people on a regular basis, but can also be expanded to accommodate up to ten people when visitors come calling. The clients wanted to stick to a strict budget, so Hunter Leggitt Studio came up with the idea to opening the project to student architects, a concept that is known as a Design/Build/+ educational experience.

HLS received hundreds of applications and finally decided on seven students, who were ultimately involved in 70 percent of the building process. By opening the project to students, the build provided education for students and a custom getaway for the clients at a fraction of the normal construction cost.
