Daniel Libeskind's funky metallic apartments will purify the Berlin air

Architect Daniel Libeskind just unveiled plans for a modern, metallic apartment complex located in the heart of Berlin.

Projected for competition by the end of 2016, the eight-story tall Chausseestrasse 43 building will feature large asymmetric windows to maximize natural light and a shining ceramic facade etched with a striking geometric pattern. The building’s most awesome feature, though, is that its shimmering ceramic tiles will consume carbon dioxide and release oxygen back into the air, just like plants do.

Famous for his use of sharp and crystal-like angles, Libeskind also uses similar theatrical flair in his design of Berlin’s newly planned apartment block. The lustrous, pointed facade will be clad in specially-designed ceramic panels that according to the Libeskind Studio, possess air purification and self-cleaning properties, making the building rather environmentally-friendly. A large double-height penthouse will be perched atop the complex, with dramatic sweeping views overlooking the city center.

“Even as my studio is often called upon to design skyscrapers these days, I continue to love to build homes, the basic unit of human life,” says Libeskind, who is better known for his skyscrapers and institutional projects. The Chausseestrasse 43 apartment complex will be located on a corner block and include 73 units ranging from one- to four-bedroom apartments. The building will also offer underground parking and first-floor retail space.
