Kazuteru Matumura renovated an old townhouse in Osaka using curtains instead of walls

Japanese architect Kazuteru Matumura renovated the interior of an old house in Osaka and transformed it into a two-storey home that uses curtains as walls.

He gutted the building's interior, used the salvaged materials to redecorate, and installed flexible curtain partitions that can move with every breeze.

The house was built for a young couple that wanted to renovate the old building instead of buying a new one. Everything within the interior was demolished and removed, and the architect added extra insulation and upgraded the space to meet current regulations. Apart from the toilet and bathroom, all other rooms within the house have partitions with no doors. Materials left over from the previous structure were reused where possible—the flooring was remade into shelves, and the bathroom doors were also recycled.

The new layout of the ground floor includes three spaces: an entrance lobby, bedroom, and the bathroom. The lobby features enough storage space and shelves for storing bikes and shoes. While the ground floor was divided into smaller spaces, the upper floor functions as one large room, comprised of the living room, kitchen and a dining area.
