Alma-nac's Slim House is a super-narrow London home filled with daylight

London-based design studio alma-nac extended an existing house in south London, creating a 2.3-meter-wide terraced home that feels more spacious and light than the original narrow structure.

The Slim House extension introduces enough space to accommodate a new ground floor dining area, an extra bedroom on the first floor and a study on the second floor.

The original building was already positioned on a narrow plot on the busy high street of St John’s Hill, Clapham. The structure, measuring just 2.3 meters wide, presented certain challenges in terms of organizing the spaces. Alma-nac managed to build the Slim House on a small budget and within those tight space constraints. Its sloped roof reduced the construction costs, while staggered rooflights allowed for natural light to reach the deepest corners of the property.

“One of the key aspects was cranking the floor plates so that the main rooms, orientated towards the southerly rear of the property, had increased head-heights and improved the outlook to the garden and sky,” said Tristan Wigfall, partner at alma-nac.
