the memory house by 23o5 studio in vietnam hosts three generations under one roof

in comparison to western countries, the cultural tradition of a vietnamese household can often include three generations living together under one roof

in itself a home can represent a mini-society, which contains its own set of rules and values which all members of the family must obey by. ‘the memory’ house by 23o5 studio uses this concept for the framework of their project which accommodates room for grandparents, adults and children.

the common difficulty found in this type of living arrangement is firstly the question of space. the second issue relates to the communication between different age groups. to solve this problem, the architects renovated the house to make it larger, creating two private spaces inside, along with a communal front and back yard. in addition, an extra common area and thoroughfare are situated at the back which helps to create privacy. although the structure allows for separation, a continuous interconnectivity reveals itself within the format of the building reflecting an independent network.

the main entrance uses a ‘porch roof’ which can be seen on most traditional vietnamese houses. this is the place where the family unites to relax, talk to neighbours, and for children to play in sight of the adults. this structure is located just within the entrance of the building which combines the old tiles which were originally used by the grandfather fifty years before. the space below the roof is designed for the whole family to have dinner together after work and the upper chamber is used as a multi-purpose area for everyone to relax.

23o5 studio the memory house vietnam designboom natural light playfully dances round the interior expelling a harmonious ambience upon the dwelling. the constant shift between old and new is expressed through the original structural components such as the columns which are complimented by modern furniture pieces. ‘the memory’ is not simply just a house, it is designed in remembrance of the family members who are already gone. the project pays homage this concept by respecting the buildings traditional elements whilst integrating contemporary features. the building does not solely exist in the past, but looks towards the future making room for many more memories to be made within its walls.
