Behind the Floating Home

Floating Home

Floating homes are surfacing all over Europe. In a step up from liveaboard vessels and traditional houseboats, they offer the space and comfort of terrestrial abodes. A Danish-English firm builds 2-story houses with 140 m2 of living space on a concrete hull designed to last a century without maintenance. Fish are often attracted to the seaweed and mussels that grow below the hull’s waterline. A Portuguese startup is about to deliver its first creations to clients in Europe, Africa and Asia. The fiberglass catamaran base facilitates transport and stability on the water. Depending on geographic location, solar panels can provide up to 80% energy self-sufficiency.
