the ‘cozy house’ by FORM/kouichi kimura architects is a private residence in shigu, japan.

honest in form, the residence is set on a small site on a narrow road where all the neighboring houses is compact and close together. the discreet, cool grey façade contrasts with the furnished interiors, the same timber can be seen on the feature wall, the table and various surfaces giving the overall space texture and softer tones against the simple material palette. the upper cantilevered structure acts as a shelter for the parking garage and entering into the home, the bedroom and child’s room is immediately located in the hallway. greeted by a center staircase, the light from the second floor passes down, making the lower level bright and rhythmical. the designers wanted to enrich and utilize all the available floor area- a common theme in japanese architecture, thus, the protruded front was added so that the maximum volume can be achieved for the use of the living room, dining, kitchen and bathroom on the second floor. as for the ceiling, they vary in height, enhancing visual expansion meanwhile the openings and windows enables generous amount of natural light to pass through the space.
