chevallier architectes' chalet captures panoramic views of mont blanc, chamonix

‘chalet piolet’ is located at the base of the snow-capped mountains of mont blanc in chamonix, france.

french firm chevellier architectes has converted the previous run-down, wooden shed, into a luxury private residence where the challenges were to maximize and develop spaces within the volume that could not be altered due to planning restrictions. the building embodies the client’s vision of mountainous architecture in the future, this is illustrated in the high-quality materials, the bold form, contemporary lines and finishing off with sustainable construction methods. the exterior is wrapped in an openwork siding with clerestory-type openings whilst the weathered and glass façade highlights the geographical and aesthetic impact. the timber siding extends onto the roof, protecting the waterproofing, acting as a snow-guard.

designed with an american influence, the ground floor is open plan with a kitchen, dining and lounging space where the L-shaped sofa faces the corner glazing with a contemporary fireplace. displaying a monochrome color palette throughout, the internal structure is reinforced by the charcal-grey elements meanwhile, the upper levels is composed of two bedrooms, an office and children’s room. the rusted steel box, a distinct feature on the exterior, frames a scenic view of one of the icy peaks- a space for contemplation, all the other rooms, deliver unique views of the beautiful, natural surroundings.
