H.ARCHITECTS designs triangular house opposite lush park in japan
a small triangle of land forms the plot of a home by H.ARCHITECTS.
the last of a three-part division, the tiny allotment–and accompanying strict japanese setback regulations–was too much trouble for prospective builders, and was instead used an an impromptu parking lot for many years. however, the homeowners’ saw the potential of the site–located directly opposite a lush, green public park.
H.ARCHITECTS’ subsequent design caters directly to the park, which substitutes for the lack of garden space in the dwelling. beyond the front door, is an exhibition like entrance space to display artifacts and represent the personalities of the museum curator and art historian who live there. the walls are painted a deep green to supplement the design’s allusions to nature.
On the second floor is a z-shaped open layout that contains the kitchen, living and dining rooms, with an adjacent triangular terrace. from the dining room a sculptural white staircase contrasts against green walls, leading up to the third floor master bedroom and patio. legally, H.ARCHITECTS plan extends to the maximum volume allowed. yet, given the land’s size, the home fits perfectly within the surrounding landscape and small city nature.
