Artfully built brick residence in bangkok by junsekino

'sometimes, an ordinary brick wishes to be something beyond itself.’

the ‘ngamwongwan house’ in bangkok, thailand focuses on the exploration of this simple component. designed by jun sekino, the architect worked closely with the local contractors and artisans to consider different methods of application. as an inexpensive and efficient material, brick construction requires little maintenance and consequently dictated the structural form- integral to the design of the simple form of the contemporary building. the hot and humid local climate influenced the architectural strategy where two layers of 30 centimeters brick walls are used with a gap in-between for insulation purposes.

Concrete and timber decked floors are used to keep the spaces cool meanwhile the residence itself, is split into two levels with 3 bedrooms, seamless outdoor and indoor areas and a communal courtyard for family gatherings. benefitting from the natural light, the interior is well lit with the added feature of the brick lattice walls which cast interesting shadows. the resulting house sits harmoniously amongst the tropical setting and inherently uses the warmth, texture and composition of the brick material to speak for itself- eliminating the need for any adornments.
