Archea associates & tagina ceramiche d'arte remodeled san lorenzo market in florence

Geometrical patterns and engraved floral decor breathes renewed existence into the historical san lorenzo market in florence, italy.

The project was completed by archea associates with help from italian tile manufacturer tagina ceramiche d’arte. the market was built over 140 years ago, and has since fallen into a state of disrepair and abandon. together, the companies’ goal was to renovate the structure, and reintroduce it as a place for good food, and good company representative of the tuscan lifestyle.

two product lines were chosen by tagina ceramiche d’arte specifically to recreate the original look of the marketplace. ‘déco perlage’ is outfitted on all walls, and blends in with original cast iron framing and nineteenth-century carpentry. ‘hard rock beton’ in the compact 20mm version, comprises the entire floor area in the structure. employment of simple and natural materials with flexible furnishings and furniture–by archea associates–along with large wicker lamps makes the space feel airy and filled at the same time.

Inside the market are dozens of small cafés and restaurants. bread, fresh fish, pastries, cured meats, and other staples of italian cuisine can be purchased as they are, or from a vender as a freshly prepared meal–cooks only use products bought and sold at the market. the meeting place’s renewed modernity, without forgetting tradition, leaves an imprint on visitors and food lovers, generating experiences that will hopefully be shared for generations to come.
