bjarke ingels group has revealed plans to renovate and extend UMass amherst’s isenberg school of management (ISOM) in massachusetts. the $62 million USD project adds 70,000 square feet of classrooms and laboratories, as well as an atrium that doubles as a cultural hub and events center. construction work has begun on site, with the new facility scheduled for completion in september 2018 and occupancy by january 2019.

developed in collaboration with boston-based practice goody clancy, BIG’s design seeks to consolidate university departments currently located across the campus. with the goal of enhancing the isenberg school’s reputation, the scheme will house the entirety of ISOM within one coordinated assemblage of buildings. a flexible configuration allows for the school’s future growth, accommodating both executive in residence programs and experiential learning.

the new structure forms a loop that connects to the existing building at two points, while a distinctive façade of sloping panels creates a prominent entrance that welcomes those accessing the building. a garden courtyard is positioned at the center of the loop, providing an outdoor space for contemplation, recreation, or special events.

internally, the 5,000 square foot atrium has been designed to accommodate student gathering and study areas, as well as special events programming for guest speakers, awards ceremonies, and banquets. new instructional spaces include two-tiered hybrid classrooms and one financial analytics classroom that will simulate a trading-floor environment.
