local studio a d lab has shared with us images from one of their recent projects, the re-wrapped house, located in a suburban area near central singapore. jalan binchang street is home to a series of semi-detached houses mainly constructed around the 70’s, a characteristic the architects sought to preserve upon receiving the request to renovate the structure that was in dire need of a remodel. as a result, a contemporary angular form emerges from the preserved original house offering stark contrast to the architecture while maintaining a sense of its history and aesthetic context. the addition includes a full two-story with habitable attic, an outdoor pool, and car port.

the structure features large expanses of glass promoting an indoor/outdoor lifestyle and taking advantage of the long hours of daylight. reflective marble and polished wood floors ensure plenty of natural light throughout the interior and outdoor decks offer views over the neighborhood, ground level patio, and swimming pool. to tie together two architecturally disparate structures, a d lab designed an angular faceted canopy that extends from the existing home over the shared open space and over the new addition. its construction reflects the traditional roofs of the area, paying homage to the architectural vernacular represented in new ways.

on the northeast side of the home, a white-painted perforated brick wall creates a screen that filters excessive light into the house as well as the outdoor spaces and forms an audible barrier buffering the noise from a major roadway nearby. the ‘breathing wall’ as it has been dubbed also helps regulate the movement of wind into the house.
