Cozy charred-timber home offers front row seats for viewing autumn colors

If relaxing by a cozy fire and watching the beauty of the changing seasons sounds like your cup of tea, you’ll love Tinkerbox. Designed by Studio MM Architect, this beautiful home nestled in the Hudson Valley woods is a retreat with enviable views of the outdoors and a stunning modern interior. We’re particularly partial to the Tinkerbox’s large fireplace window seat that’s perfect for cozying up on with a good book.

Commissioned by a car-loving client, the 1,260-square-foot Tinkerbox features a spacious garage large enough for car storage and maintenance. The lower level also comprises a large wine cellar and furniture workshop. The boxy home is clad in charred cedar siding save for a portion of the lower level buried into the hillside that’s constructed from exposed concrete. A twelve-foot-tall mahogany pivot door that opens to a double-height entryway provides a vibrant pop of color in the otherwise black-and-white facade.

Stairs made from hardwood trees formerly on-site lead up from the ground-floor entry to the main living level. To the left of the stairs are an open-plan living room, dining area, and kitchen, whereas the bedroom and office studio are tucked away to the right side. Large windows fill the contemporary interior with natural light and frame views of the outdoors. Sliding doors open up to a shaded outdoor deck.
