BIG’s LEGO House tops out with opening date in September
The place where “fun is handmade” just got one big step closer to becoming a reality. The Bjarke Ingel Group-designed LEGO House recently topped out near the toy brand’s corporate campus in Billund, Denmark and has been assigned a grand opening date for September 28, 2017. Designed as a stack of larger-than-life LEGO bricks, the new LEGO experience center will offer a variety of LEGO-themed exhibitions and activities.
Located in Billund where the LEGO brick was invented, the LEGO House has been seven years in the making and is designed to bring the toy brand’s story to life with ample activities for play and learning. The 12,000-square-meter center will accommodate an estimated 250,000 visitors annually with free and paid activities. To keep the center open to the community, the large LEGO Square inside the LEGO House will be publicly accessible and can be used as a gathering space. Non-ticket holders are also free to access the rooftop terraces, shop, restaurants, and certain play areas. The ticketed Experience Zones will be organized in four color-coded areas, each designed to embodying the brand’s “Learning Through Play” philosophy.
Comprising 21 enormous LEGO brick-like volumes stacked atop one another, the LEGO House captures the brand’s spirit of fun through its toy-inspired form. The rectangular blocks are carefully staggered to create publicly accessible rooftop terraces and to let natural light into the building and into the 2,000-square-meter LEGO Square at the heart of the complex. Textured clay tiles will clad the facade to help the building look more like the plastic LEGO blocks. Ticket sales for the LEGO House’s Experience Zones will begin in June.
