following up our previous coverage of I.M. pei’s previously completed museum of islamic art which opened in late 2008 in doha, qatar, new york-based photographer yueqi ‘jazzy’ li has released a series of updated images depicting the intricately geometrical structure. the museum is situated on the waterfront next to the persian gulf, standing as an object in space that can only be approached by one of many long walkways that transition guests from the chaos of the city to the designed tranquility of the space. the french limestone facade captures light and shadow highlighting the complex geometries that make up the exterior form, situating the design in history and space appropriately.

what the exterior establishes in volumetric relationships the interior continues through an exhaustive and meticulous structural and spatial design. openings, structural components, materials- all carefully worked together to function in unison and provide the visitor with a sense of scale and completeness. li‘s photographs capture the immensity and delicacy of all such elements, showing how pattern and symmetry can be understood and broken down through various scales as one changes vantage points within the space. artificial light, steel, and the same limestone tiles from the exterior are arranged to create endless patterns on all surfaces of the interior, while a full-height three-sided faceted window facing the gulf provides natural light into the large central space.
