15 art galleries to open in and around zaha hadid's high line residential building

15 brand new gallery spaces are coming to new york’s chelsea neighborhood, with venues within and adjacent to zaha hadid’s 520 west 28th. as part of the project, the ‘high line nine’ will comprise a collection of boutique exhibition spaces beneath the elevated park. the initiative seeks to enhance the district’s cultural character, while further enriching the gallery corridor to the hudson yards district to the north — soon to include thomas heatherwick’s urban landmark ‘vessel’.

developed by related companies, the new spaces will accommodate a range of domestic and international institutions. the paul kasmin gallery, founded in soho and now occupying three locations in west chelsea, will anchor the collection with a 5,000 square foot gallery and an additional exhibition space in the ‘high line nine’. spaces in zaha hadid’s 520 west 28th will open in the spring of 2017, while the adjacent stand-alone galleries and the ‘high line nine’ complex are scheduled to complete later in the year. two of the new buildings have been designed by studioMDA founder markus dochantschi.

inspired by european gallerias, the ‘high line nine’ is a collection of boutique exhibition spaces, ranging from 650 to 1,800 square feet. on-site amenities — such as a catering kitchen, wine bar, and restrooms — are also incorporated as part of the scheme. other services include concierge, destination marketing and events, cleaning, waste removal, and security. the spaces are currently pre-leasing, offering potential gallerists the opportunity to customize their respective spaces during construction.

‘this project was inspired by zaha hadid’s sculptural building at 520 west 28th street, which is one of the finest residential buildings in the city and a monumental piece of art,’ says greg gushee, related executive vice president. ‘we saw the unique opportunity to create a vibrant, diverse gallery offering to expand and further enhance the west chelsea art district.’
