seattle-based studio zeroplus shared with us images of the sneeoosh cabin located in the picturesque forested landscape of deception pass state park overlooking skagit bay in washington state. the humble retreat provides shelter for guests who want to experience the surrounding raw nature from within the comfort of a contemporary dwelling. the site, which contained several mature douglas fir and cedar trees, some with trunks measuring three feet in diameter, situated within the swinomish indian reservation led the architects to employ a structural strategy that would cause the least amount of permanent damage to the site.

zeroplus calculated eight simple concrete disks that would act as piers sitting on the ground rather than utilizing more invasive traditional footings. external steel columns support an insulated framed canopy that hovers above the living area. situated under the dense tree canopies the primary living space is wrapped in glass walls on all sides to provide a panoramic and immediate connection to the outdoors. the interior is split into two major parts, the previously mentioned open living area and the cocoon-like bedrooms hanging from structure’s A-frames. this thermally conditioned feature is built of prefabricated panels that provide not only the desired privacy but temperature control as well.
