spanish studio masquespacio has completed its latest project in cologne, germany, for the supermarket chain ‘solera’ — owned by sevillian entrepreneur pepa bascón. twenty years ago, she decided to move to the city in search of new adventures. after a long experience in hospitality, she wished to set up a small store for spanish products in the center of cologne — bringing the best of her native country to germany. with great success, she later planned for a more ambitious wholesaler that meets the growing demands of her products by italian and spanish restaurants in and around the city.

the augmenting popularity of spanish gastronomy in germany has encouraged pepa bascón in 2016 to open a ‘cash & carry’ supermarket which offers a specific service to non-professional clients in cologne. for that she commissioned masquespacio to design the brand and interior space. the latest 500 sqm solera store is developed in search of a touch of mediterranean emotion, mixed with functional features necessary for this type of business. the predominating black color offers more serious tones, contrasted with several vibrant colors reminiscent of spanish flair.

when entering the store, visitors are met with typical mediterranean tiles as well as decorated grids that evoke the famous andalusian coast. finally, the signage, also developed by the studio, follows the unique patterns of ‘solera’ and adds a touch of emotion through the supermarket’s interior design — transmitting an upbeat spanish vibe and sense of culture.
