The View House: Staircase

The Walden Residence is located in Kansas City's Westside, an eclectic neighborhood centrally located adjacent to the Crossroads Arts District, Downtown Central Business District and the West Bottoms.

The design is organized by a central, light-filled stairwell that acts as both a source of illumination during the day and a lantern perched on the cliff at night. The lantern illumination is achieved by way of a series of cantilevered linear fluorescent (Zag/studio by Bartco). The DRAW team worked closely with lighting designer Derek Porter to achieve the appearance of the linear fixture weaving in and out of the wall ' appearing at times in unorthodox places. This prototype fixture was being developed by Porter for Bartco and this was the first residential installation.
