KWADRANT B

Ten years ago, architects' office Knoups from Budel was assigned the task of completing three projects at a location in Nederweert by the Nederweert housing association.

In the first part of the project, the architects coordinated the design with the architecture in the surrounding area and, in particular, the architecture of the church in this area. In the second part of the project, a link was made with the white dwellings in the immediate vicinity of the school. In the third part of the project, named 'Kwadrant B', a site was allocated for 38 care homes and 28 apartments for senior citizens. In order to be able to complete the total volume required, Rob Meuwissen of Knoups Architecten stated that the design would need to consist of a four-storey building.

In order to be able to position this in the correct context in the surrounding area, the top storey was set back and integrated in the tiled roof. This is a solution that was also often used during the style period of the Amsterdam School (1910 -1940). Once this idea actually took off, all sorts of other details were subtly incorporated from this trend. The characteristic balcony shapes were set slightly forwards and consisted of bricks placed in a vertical pattern. The building suits its surrounding environment much better due to the use of different colours of brickwork, a theme which was also used in the windows and doors.
