This former “workers cottage” was transformed into an updated livable space

A for Architecture have recently completed the transformation of a inner-city weatherboard workers cottage in Melbourne, Australia, into a home for a growing young family.

At the front of the small cottage, two bedrooms were kept, however at the rear of the cottage, the space was extended and opened up to the back garden. The new portion of the house includes an open floor plan with the living area, dining area and the kitchen.

The material palette that was chosen for the interior consists of concrete, brick, timber and black, as it’s able to endure the children’s scooters and footballs, while at the same time providing a modern and uncluttered aesthetic.

The black elements of the kitchen, like the island and ceiling, create a dramatic look while at the same time complimenting the black frames that surround the windows and doors at the opposite end of the open plan room.

Beside the kitchen is a hallway that connects the new extension and the original bedrooms of the cottage.

Here’s a look at one of the bathrooms in the cottage. Simple white walls and tiles are paired with black floor tiles and a floating vanity for a contemporary appearance.

Off the hallway there’s a set of stairs that leads to the upper floor of the home. At the top of the stairs is a small built-in home office area, with a wood desk and open black shelving.
