dutch architecture firm MVRDV and co-architects BSK arkitekter reveal their vision for ‘magasin 113’, a former warehouse that will be transformed into a 16,500 square meters mixed use complex in frihamnen rivercity — the largest urban development project in scandinavia. as one of the few remaining multi-story warehouses, ‘magasin 113’ will become a lively cultural development with both private and public functions.

the entire site occupies the edge of an existing public square on the riverfront and will incorporate public amenities. MVRDV and BSK arkitekter utilize the warehouse structure to offer flexible offices, an art centre, pop-up spaces, and more. gothenburg-based advertising agency forsman & bodenfors and göteborgs konsthall have plans to establish its offices in the building.

the warehouse typology was envisioned as a flexible space for diverse functions. the brick facade and interiors will be restored while the concrete frame will support three new levels of timber-framed floors above. the additional levels will create diverse spatial experiences from the ground level upwards.

a transparent glass protective ‘raincoat’ will be wrapped around the entire structure to resolve the need for insulation. the combination of pre-existing brick with modern elements such as the glass skin will create a blend of old and new, wherein solidity and transparency work in dialogue with each other. vertical circulation is resolved by distinct staircases which weave through the building to create a dynamic public route through the space.

the project will become a public node that unites urban spaces in the area. ‘magasin 113’ will attract a wide range of tenants and services, which in turn will help to create an inviting and desirable neighborhood.
