mexican architect david cervera has designed the ‘el palmar’ summer house located in the port of chuburna yucatán, mexico. the project includes a single bedroom, kitchen, living room and pool in a tropical and serene setting. with a small interior space of 90 sqm (approximately 970 sqf), the architect faced the challenge of satisfying the needs of a family of four. the home is well ventilated and open to allow the breeze from surrounding palm trees to enter freely.
cervera chose to locate the house at the back of the lot, creating a large front yard. the three core spaces face a semi-open terrace to the north. the living area and kitchen extend the interior into the exterior courtyard, where a pool invites guests to relax outdoors. through the terrace, the social space of the home is integrated freely with the outdoors. the bedroom maintains a more intimate position towards the east.
the architect employs local materials from the yucatán region including chukum, a waterproof finish made from tree roots which prevents paint from wearing. the floors are built from white polished concrete and decorated with mosaics. vibrant hues of pink are selectively placed around different facets of the home, accenting the framed views of the surrounding nature.
cervera’s portfolio includes a vast array of beach homes and contemporary dwellings around latin america. his work has been acclaimed for its careful attention to setting and materials and its careful relationship between interior and exterior.
