bevk perović arhitekti has unveiled plans to renovate and extend slovenia’s national theater. located at the center of ljubljana, the country’s capital, ‘SNG drama’ was originally built at the beginning of the 20th century before being renovated in 1960s. the planned intervention seeks to establish the theater as a modern-day venue for events and performances, equipped with advanced technical capabilities.
bevk perović arhitekti’s design centers around the creation of a multi-functional entrance lobby — conceived as a ‘living room of the city’ — that contains ticket booths, shops, cafés, and other public amenities. the original SNG drama building will also be renovated, with the new volume replacing a previous extension built in the 1960s. in addition, the open space around the building will be redefined, better connecting the theater with its surrounding urban fabric.
the extension forms a stark contrast against the historic building with tall rippling walls flanking the original architecture. the perforated façade — which appropriately appears as a giant silver stage curtain — allows daylight to enter, ensuring that the theater’s interior spaces establish a connection with the adjacent public square. at night, light emanates from the spaces behind the façade, softly illuminating the structure.
