Medici Architects rock 5-Star Built Green standards with gorgeous Kirkland Home
The first thing you notice is the reclaimed wood siding Medici Architects applied to the outside of this striking modern home in downtown Kirkland, WA.
Sustainable residential developers Dwell NW commissioned the architects to design an ultra green home for an up-and-coming pedestrian-friendly neighborhood across the water from Seattle. To achieve 5-star Built Green certification, a voluntary green building code for master builders of King and Snohomish counties in Washington state, Medici incorporated a range of energy-efficient building techniques and reclaimed materials, resulting in a gorgeous net-zero energy ready home that supports a vibrant and healthy lifestyle.
The new home on 6th Avenue boasts a jumble of materials, like a quilt, many of which have been reclaimed. Horizontal repurposed wood siding meets vertical slats that in turn slide up the overhang that provides shade below. Elsewhere one will find panels of aluminum on the exterior matched with conventional materials.
Large cutouts in the facade promote natural daylight, while triple glazing ensures minimal solar gain inside. Combined with a heat recovery ventilation system and high-impact insulation, these techniques help the home meet the highest energy-efficiency standards — not only in Washington state, but anwyere. The home is also designed to incorporate rooftop solar when the inhabitants are ready to make the switch.
The interior detailing strikes a smooth balance to create a contemporary home with clean lines that is warm and cozy, with something of a farmhouse aesthetic thanks to the abundance of natural materials used. The floors, countertops and tiles are also crafted with reclaimed materials. Interior and exterior staircases provide access between floors and a shaded balcony on the second floor extends the living space outdoors. At 3900 square feet, this house is isn’t for everyone, but it is nice to see luxury housing developers can operate with a green conscience.
