shanghai-based firm atelier deshaus has completed the structural renovation of a concrete industrial building in china’s zhejiang province. once the interiors are also complete, the ‘taizhou contemporary art museum’ will open as part of a new cultural destination, joining other converted factories and warehouse buildings. consequently, as the project’s centerpiece, the art museum intends to initiate a dialogue with its neighbors.
comprising eight exhibition rooms, the ‘taizhou contemporary art museum’ occupies a total construction area of 2,450 square meters (26,371 sqf). internally, a rich spatial sequence has been established with adjacent floors staggered to alleviate any sense of steepness. to illustrate the building’s current state, atelier deshaus has also commissioned chinese artist yin yi to document its raw appearance as part of a new video.
the distinct spatial atmosphere is further amplified through the contrast of the cast in-situ concrete and the spaces formed by the barrel vault structure. visitors will enter the building via a lobby, which adjoins an external public square. the lobby, which has been designed with the potential of hosting public events, will also include a café and art store. guests will ascend the building in a spiraling motion, before reaching the main exhibition room on the top floor. from here there will be a clear view of the nearby mountain range.
