SANAA's poetic installation distorts viewers' surroundings using several layers of transparent acrylic

kazuyo sejima + ryue nishizawa/SANAA respond to the venice biennale theme of freespace with guruguru, a transparent circular installation. using several layers of acrylic panels positioned close to each other, the poetic space distorts viewers’ surroundings as they walk around it depending on time, light and other people’s presence.

‘we imagined an installation which lets the visitors perceive the space in different ways,’ explains SANAA. within the installation, the idea of freespace takes the form of a spiral, with no beginning and no end, while its clear partitions keep the space free from modifications and create a soft filter from the inside to the outside of the environment. the almost invisible loop barely forms an enclosure, providing an alternative to mass and weight.
