Facebook’s new Frank Gehry-designed LEED-certified headquarters boasts a beautiful artistic interior
Facebook officially moved in to its new Frank Gehry-designed Menlo Park headquarters this weekend.
Topped with a sprawling park-like green roof, the 430,000-square-foot LEED-certified headquarters, known as MPK 20, will house 2,800 employees—just under a third of Facebook’s global team. Though the exterior of the large angular campus is much more tame than some of Gehry’s famous deconstructivist works, the building’s open-plan interior is vibrantly decorated with eye-catching murals. Hit the jump to take a peek inside Facebook’s new headquarters as documented by high-profile Instagrammers.
Elevated on stilts above the parking garage, the long MPK 20 building is topped by a nine-acre landscaped roof that’s invited comparisons to New York’s High Line. The headquarters’ understated design tries to keep a low profile despite its massive size and was created in response to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s desires for a simple building. “From the start, Mark wanted a space that was unassuming, matter-of-fact, and cost effective,” says Gehry.
In contrast to the subdued exterior, the interior is more vibrant and expressive. In celebration of MPK 20’s completion, Facebook invited high-profile photographers on Instagram, the photo-sharing service owned by Facebook, to take photographs of the interior open-plan workspace, essentially a single massive room (devoid of cubicles) for the company’s 2,800 employees. The walls are covered with colorful sprawling murals and art installations designed by about fifteen local artists.
