1Rebel Boutique Gym in London by Studio C102

Introducing a new fitness concept tailored to the needs of the busy Londoner, 1Rebel, the new luxury boutique brand of gyms, combines highly intense fitness sessions with live music, bespoke playlists, healthy food and a small luxury sportswear retail section.

Situated on St. Mary Axe, the very first 1Rebel gym occupies an approximately 745-square-meter (8,000 sq. feet) former office area which has been stripped down and reconfigured into an urban, energetic space by the young London-based architecture practice Studio C102. ‘‘Our brief was to design a gym where each class felt like a night out,’’ Kyriakos Katsaros, founder of Studio C102, explains, ‘‘an event in its own right rather than a means to an end.’’

Bare concrete walls, exposed ductwork and pipes, spray-stencilled signage and other industrial elements were combined with vintage furniture, reclaimed light fittings and bespoke design features, following 1Rebel’s ‘‘industrial luxe design language.’’ A large cinema-like illuminated sign hangs outside the main RIDE studio, wherein bicycles sit in three tiers facing a podium on which the instructor is standing, sometimes accompanied by live bands. In the basement area, the RESHAPE studio offers a compact 45-minute training programme on treadmills and custom-designed workout benches. Equally impressive are the spacious changing rooms, where guests can find luxury skincare products and even chilled towels for a little post training pampering. Designed by Athens-based k-studio, the Roots & Bulbs juice bar at the gym's entrance provides guests with welcome refreshments and a selection of healthy food.

About the designers

Studio C102 is a new studio working in the fields of architecture and interior design established by Kyriakos Katsaros in 2013. Based in London, the studio’s approach to design at all scales is one of recycling and using modest materials in novel ways to create high quality bespoke designs. With a preference for raw materials such as concrete, timber, copper and rubber, Studio C102 has a playful and tactile approach to adapting, re-imagining and breathing new life into existing structures.
