MAD proposes 'living garden' as home of the future at china house vision 2018

MAD architects presents its model for the ‘home of the future’ envisioning an ‘en-plein-air’ atmosphere that aims to break down the boundaries between interior and exterior, giving inhabitants the feeling that they are living in nature. in place of a traditional home – where walls and roofs form boundaries – a curved, floating roof slopes downwards atop an open grid-like structure.

layered with translucent, waterproof glass, the undulating top protects the ‘interior’ from the rain, whilst providing natural ventilation, and allowing sunlight to flood inside. MAD has strategically placed solar panels above, the angle of each perfectly positioned to harnesses maximum amounts of sunlight and provide power throughout the home. collectively, they generate enough electric energy to power the daily consumption of a family of three.

‘maintaining an openness towards the sky and its surroundings, ‘living garden’ sees life, (solar) energy, and nature coincide, seamlessly blending together to create an architectural ‘living’ landscape‘, it reads in a statement released by the studio. ‘one that emphasizes humanity’s emotional connection with nature.‘

the studio presents this model on the occasion of the 2018 china house vision exhibition conceived in partnership with chinese multinational renewable energy company, hanergy, who provided the solar panels. the china house vision exhibition is adjacent to the bird’s nest (inside beijing’s olympic park) from september 21st – november 6th, 2018.
