ai weiwei adds concrete six room villa to sifang art museum site in china
on the expansive grounds of sifang parkland in nanjing, china, an array of internationally renowned architects and artists have contributed their creativity by developing and showcasing installations, pavilions and architecture.
this has included pritzker prizewinner wang shu, british architect david adjaye, ettore sottsass and steven holl. alongside the architects, chinese artist- ai weiwei has also added to the architectural collection with his ‘six room’ villa.
a house with no owner, the entire structure is composed of purely concrete, stands on a hill and has six, clearly divided but connected rooms standing side by side. the slightly curving structure, with six units- ‘aims to restore the functions and formations of the building into fundamental factors in language.’ modestly austere in comparison to the other schemes on the estate. internally, the furniture is mostly made of timber crates, installed with wheels and reflecting a mobile aesthetic.
