chad oppenheim frames island views with bahamas beach retreat

designed to intrinsically connect with the lush island nature and surroundings, this beach house by architect chad oppenheim, is nestled on the dunes adjacent to the pristine shores of harbor island in the bahamas.

the 3,000 square foot private residence is an exercise in minimalism with an elegant touch. the simplistic and natural form adopts ecologically, sensitive materials and methodologies to create a livable and environmentally conscious scheme. mainly constructed with concrete, recycled cedar, reused ipe, and milk paint, the technological details, fixtures and air-conditioning have been hidden to allow seamless surfaces throughout.

capturing views of the jungle palms on one side and the ocean on the other, the retractable glass walls- like an open breezeway- allowing natural light and airflow to maintain an optimal comfort. the central communal space, decked in an ash timber, enables visual connectivity and simultaneously is sheltered from the elements by the overhang of the gabled roof. occupied by a lounge and dining area, this versatile, core space is used for meditating, yoga, hosting gatherings and a general area to soak in the tropical landscape.
