Residential Extension

This project required the extension and refurbishment of the 3-bed terraced house in North Dublin in which Stephen grew up, commissioned by his parents.

Dolores and Steve Kavangh Snr wanted something spacious and light that would connect them to their sizeable garden which has effectively been hidden from view since they moved into the house almost 20 years ago. A large amount of glazing was employed to provide a transformative panoramic view out, while also increasing the solar heat gain into the house. The old kitchen extension had been the greatest source of heat loss in the extension, so it seemed fitting to replace it with a nett contributor to overall thermal comfort. With the extension primarily facing north, a roof light runs the length of the extension to allow sunlight to enter the space throughout the day.

To counteract the clean clinical lines of the glass, Steve decided to build the solid elements of the extension in timber frame and expose as much of it as possible, with concealed LED lights illuminating the exposed timber joists.
